Dancing with beginners

July 23, 2006

Last night it was Angie’s birthday (Happy birthday Angie!) and around 15 of us went to dinner and then we hit up toast nightclub in the city. It was a great night because we got to know and dance with some new beginner Salseros and Salseras, which is always fun. I really enjoy dancing with beginners because I feel as though we get a lot out of it. The beginner gets a better feel for how the dance works through dancing with a more experienced dancer. At the same time it really challenges me in getting them to follow the moves that I lead through giving them the appropriate signals that are obvious enough for them to understand. While it’s cool to hit up the floor with another more experienced dancer and really dazzle the audience with your flawlessly executed moves, I think the true test of whether someone makes a good dancer is how well they can lead a less experienced follower through the moves that they want them to do.
